My Story

Hi, I'm Gillian!

I have been an English teacher for more than 20 years, spending most of my career in a busy Chorley
high school. What I have always loved most about teaching is the variety — no two days are ever the
same — and the energy that students bring each day. Working with young people, helping them
grow in confidence, and seeing them achieve their goals has been incredibly rewarding throughout
my career.

Over time, my experience and interests naturally led me towards the pastoral side of education. As
Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for achievement, I saw first-hand that students thrive
academically when they feel happy, supported, and comfortable in their environment. Creating a
positive and inclusive atmosphere became something I felt very strongly about. I was passionate
about building a supportive network of staff who worked together to ensure every child was valued,
encouraged, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Now, as a tutor working on a more individual basis, I am able to bring those same values into my
sessions. I enjoy getting to know each student, understanding how they learn best, and helping them
build both confidence and independence. For me, success is not only about academic results, but
also about helping young people feel capable, motivated, and proud of what they can achieve.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading — perhaps unsurprisingly for an English teacher — as well as visiting
the theatre and travelling whenever I get the chance. I try to stay fit and healthy, especially enjoying
the motivation and camaraderie that comes from regular gym classes. I am also a keen supporter of
the Wigan Warriors and love watching them play whenever I can.
