My Story
Hi, I'm Mike!
Few people take the route into education that I have. Before moving into teaching and academia, I spent more than 30 years as a Detective Constable with Leicestershire Police, working in a career that demanded analytical thinking, attention to detail and strong communication skills.
Throughout my policing career, I became heavily involved in training and developing both Police Officers and support staff. Helping others learn, grow and achieve their potential became one of the most rewarding aspects of my work and ultimately led me into higher education.
Since leaving the police, I have taught on undergraduate and postgraduate criminology and policing programmes, helping students explore complex ideas, develop critical thinking skills and succeed in their academic studies. I particularly enjoy encouraging learners to question, investigate and think independently rather than simply memorising facts.
Away from the classroom, history has always been a passion of mine. This interest led me to complete both a Master's degree and a PhD specialising in First World War Studies. I am fascinated by the stories, decisions and human experiences that shape history, and I enjoy bringing these subjects to life for students.
Whether supporting learners with history, humanities, essay writing or study skills, my aim is to make learning engaging, thought-provoking and enjoyable. I believe education should spark curiosity, encourage confidence and help young people develop skills that will serve them long after they leave the classroom.
